I'm very sorry that you got stung in the ass, but I'm so happy I found 15 consecutive minutes this afternoon to catch up on all of your blogging hilarity :) BTW, as a former history teacher, now stay-at-home mom of 4 with a smartass husband, and fellow victim of bees who always head for the butt, I'm beginning to wonder if we were separated at birth...

You gave up man-to-man defense with the birth of your third, so being outnumbered 2 to 1 won't rock your world too much. Except when Jay's at work or out of town and you're outnumbered 4 to 1 :) I'm not sure how you feel about "surviving 4" come July, but I'll tell you that our family felt incomplete until Ty came along (COMPLETELY unexpected)! He is the jewel in my crown... even if I haven't slept through the night in 7 years. Congrats! :)

Kind of. My dad really wanted us to play Santa, but my mom thought it was part of a growing consumerist culture (she was/is a hippie). Their compromise was that as soon as I asked questions they would be honest with their answers. The result was that I was 4 years old when I stopped believing in Santa. We still made cookies and had stockings and got presents on Christmas morning--and I do all of those things with my kids, too.

Yay! I'm so happy that you're blogging again! And I'm thrilled that Griffin wants reindeer to fly! While I understand your reason for not letting your kids believe in Santa, I think it's okay to encourage our kids' imaginations--even if it means letting them believe in cartoons and fairy tales if they choose. Childhood is precious and amazing and all too short.

This is my mantra, that occasionally works to get me to stop comparing myself to others (especially women). "My gifts lie in other areas. That woman is not good at something I am good at." Which, I realize, is mean to that other woman (who probably doesn't even know or care that I'm comparing myself to her) in the moment. However, it snaps me out of going down the road where I end up feeling frumpy, useless, untalented, etc. Then I can focus on celebrating both her strengths and mine.
Doesn't always work, and there are certainly some people who seem to drink from some enchanted fountain that coats their life in perfection. But we really are just all doing the best we can with what we have.
Some of us just have the scrapbook to prove it and others of us just have the box full of pictures! :)

I was actually just talking with Todd Fields about this (yep, shamelessly name dropping!). He mentioned that they were the "weird" family that didn't sign their kids up for sports on a regular basis. He has 4 boys. He said he had heard a former Ga Tech football player speak on this subject to a group of parents. It was this man's opinion that people who sign their kids up for all these activities at 18 months old in hopes of getting a college scholarship would be better off doing one of two things: investing the money they spend on these activities year after year in a college savings account or playing the lottery. You apparently have a higher chance of winning the lottery than raising a scholarship athlete. Also, if you have ability and talent for a sport, enough to get a scholarship, you will have that ability at 12, even if you don't start the sport until then.
This made me feel a lot better about our decision to also be a "weird" family. I'd actually like to see my children somewhere other than in the back of my car as I shuttle then from one activity to another. Never mind that I'd rather spend that money on a vacation, not another registration fee.
I am completely on board with raising emotionally healthy, well-rested children. I figure the chances of my kids being well-known for some sport or activity are slim, but their chances of getting married and having their own families are pretty high. I'd rather them be good spouses and parents than a great athlete any day.

There are other dads, Scruff. Some even complain when I don't write often enough because they are bored at work. :) I'm afraid that we may not be able to afford to take all of our kids to the dentist, let alone to multiple activities. I'm with you on the crabapple throwing, although in my neighborhood we threw creek bed clay and pine cones when we played war. And it was awesome.
